Concussion Clinic Birmingham
A clear plan for recovery after concussion
Headaches, dizziness or brain fog after a concussion can make daily life hard. At Peak Health Physiotherapy in Moseley, Birmingham, we assess your symptoms and build a recovery plan around you.
Your care will be led by Andrea De Marchi, an experienced physiotherapist with expertise in concussion management. He helped establish and led the University of Birmingham's concussion clinic service and has been involved in concussion research.
We see people over 16 after sport injuries, falls and accidents. You can book directly. You do not need a GP referral.
Still not feeling yourself after concussion?
Concussion is a brain injury that affects how the brain works. You do not have to be knocked out to have a concussion. It can happen after a hit to the head or a force to the body that jolts the brain. 1, 2
You may notice:
- Headaches or neck pain.
- Dizziness, feeling off balance or discomfort in busy places.
- Brain fog, slower thinking or trouble concentrating.
- Feeling unusually tired or having trouble sleeping.
- Sensitivity to light or noise.
- Blurred vision or difficulty reading.
- Symptoms that increase with physical activity.
- Changes in mood, worry or reduced confidence.
These symptoms can have more than one cause. An assessment helps us understand what may be contributing and whether you need other medical care. 2, 3
You do not need to be an athlete. We also see people recovering after a fall, a workplace injury or a road accident, once any urgent medical needs have been addressed.
Meet Andrea De Marchi
Experience in clinic, sport and research
Andrea has worked as a physiotherapist since 2010. From 2019 to 2025, he worked as Senior Physiotherapist at the University of Birmingham Performance Centre.
He played a key role in setting up the university's concussion clinic service and led it, helping over 100 athletes through recovery with input from different health professionals.
He also took part in concussion research led by Professor Sam Lucas. The project looked at whether substances measured in saliva and blood could help researchers understand concussion diagnosis and management.
His wider sports experience includes work with Wolverhampton Wanderers FC Academy and Birmingham Moseley RFC. He brings this clinical, sporting and research experience to your care at Peak Health.
He currently works as a lecturer at University College Birmingham, where he helps develop the next generation of healthcare professionals.
What happens at your first appointment?
Your initial assessment lasts up to 60 minutes. We start by listening to what happened, how you feel and what you want to get back to.
Depending on your symptoms and what is safe for you, your assessment may include:
- Your injury history, general health and current symptoms.
- How symptoms affect work, study, sleep and daily life.
- Neck movement and pain.
- Balance and the body's system for sensing movement.
- Eye movements and symptoms linked to reading or moving your head.
- How you respond to physical activity, with exercise testing when suitable.
We explain our findings in plain words. Together, we agree on the next steps. You can bring any discharge notes, scan reports or previous treatment information you have.
Concussion treatment built around you
Rehabilitation means helping you get back to daily activities. Your plan depends on your assessment and may include:
Help with dizziness and balance
Targeted exercises may help with balance, movement sensitivity and some types of dizziness. This is sometimes called vestibular rehabilitation: treatment for the body's balance system. 2, 3
Treatment for neck pain and related headaches
A concussion injury can also affect the neck. We assess neck pain and movement, and offer treatment when suitable. We also consider other causes of headaches and dizziness. 2, 3
A gradual return to exercise
We can help you find a suitable starting point and build up activity based on your symptoms. The aim is a steady return to exercise, with the right level of effort for you. 2, 3
Support for everyday life
We discuss pacing, sleep habits and practical steps for work or study. We review your progress and adjust the plan as needed.
If you need support beyond physiotherapy, we can help arrange a referral to an appropriate professional. This may include medical review or psychological support for anxiety, low mood or other concerns.
The aim is to improve your symptoms and daily function. Progress varies, and we cannot promise a particular result or recovery date.
Returning to work, study and sport
Your plan should fit the activities that matter to you. That may mean shorter periods of study, changes at work, or a gradual return to training.
If you play sport, a suspected concussion means stopping play and getting assessed. Do not return the same day. Returning to contact sport needs a step-by-step plan and the checks required by your sport. Feeling better alone is not enough to decide you are ready. 2, 4
We help you work through this process and seek medical clearance where required.

Common questions
How long does concussion recovery take?
Can physiotherapy help with lasting concussion symptoms?
Should I rest or exercise after concussion?
After your medical assessment, take it easier for the first 24 to 48 hours. This usually means reducing demanding activities while keeping gentle daily activity, as advised. Then build up activity gradually. Avoid activities where you could hit your head again. 2, 3, 4
Long periods of complete rest are generally not advised. The right exercise and pace depend on your symptoms. Ask for guidance rather than pushing through worsening symptoms.
Can I have concussion if my scan was normal?
Is post-concussion syndrome permanent?
How many appointments will I need?
This depends on your symptoms, goals and progress. We discuss this after your assessment and review it with you. The package includes an assessment and one follow-up; further visits may be needed.
